EARLY BIRD
Rebecca Prosser, recorders - from bass to sopranino
Vincent Lindsey-Clark, guitar
Sharon Gould, harpsichord
A programme of Spanish and French Baroque music, opening with 16th and 17th century dance and popular tunes by Arbeau, Ortiz and Sanz. Guitar solos by their contemporaries Narvaez and Mudarra, and a folksong-based harpsichord solo by Cabezon, will be followed by Handel’s great Sonata in C major for recorder and continuo.
In the second half, the Early Bird focus will turn for the first time to 18th century master of French chamber music, Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. Birdsong chirrups will be supplied by an arrangement for the trio from François Couperin’s Suite of avian-inspired nature pieces. Two ‘Songs of Spain’ by Isaac Albeniz, ‘Cordoba’ and ‘Sevilla’, will challenge the musicians to produce their most dramatic and colourful playing in the finale.
